The Sierra Madre town of Creel is a lively place. The Tarahumara people, who make up a small but visible minority, are some of the most photogenic (and most camera shy) people in the world. The women wear brightly colored head scarves, brilliant dresses and color-coordinated socks. The men are usually decked out in cowboy hats and boots.
Aside from the Tarahumara, you never know what you might see in Creel – a cowboy may ride a horse down main street, a hipster might speed by on a bike, a gaggle of kids with ice cream cones might scurry by.
Add it all up, and it is a fun place for people watching and street photography. After two days of intense hiking and biking, I could barely walk so I spent an afternoon taking photos of people in the city center. Below is glimpse of life in Creel. Click on any photo to open a slideshow view.

Have you been to Creel, Mexico?
Looks like a great place to unwind for a bit after all your hiking/biking. And it must be off the beaten path, it doesn’t look touristy at al.
Laura, it is a little touristy, but tourism really hasn’t taken hold in the Copper Canyon and Creel like the govt would like it to. It was starting to take off around 2005 but the financial crisis coincided with some drug violence in 2008 and it hasn’t recovered. Hopefully it will bounce back because the area is awesome and the people are great.
So did you get your cowboy hat to fit in?
Yes. My hat, boots and six-shooter were not out of place.
Looks like a great spot to hang out. Glad it is not over run by tourists but with enough amenities to enjoy.
You’d like it here for sure. Great hiking and mountain biking, and 40 minutes away is a via ferreta and the world’s longest zip line!
I saw those zipline photos on Facebook! Wowza!
Great Photos as always! You do know how to capture the best moment in a photo!
Thank you Marilyn, I appreciate it!
