Taiwan’s Weird Trash System, or I started a YouTube Channel

Taiwan

One of the first things you notice when you visit Taiwan is the classical music. Throughout the morning and again in the late afternoon and evening, you’ll hear Beethoven blasted out on tinny speakers, and it has a Pavlovian effect on the locals. When they hear it, they gather up the trash and head outside.

Taiwan has a unique waste disposal system centered around musical trash trucks that cruise through the city, serenading people the way ice cream trucks call to kids in America.

Now is probably a good time to tell you all that I started a YouTube channel, and I made a video about how Taiwan went from “Trash Island” to a world leader in recycling – and musical garbage trucks are a big reason why.

Instead of me writing about it, you can watch the video. As a bonus, you’ll see me be incredibly goofy and hopefully informative.

  1. Jenny Pender says:

That is weird. But brilliant. I like how it makes people confront how much waste they create.

    • It is different for sure. It looks like a big party before the truck arrives and it is sort of a big daily event.

  2. That’s a really fun and educational video. Well done, Jeff! When James and I were walking near the Music Center, we heard that sound and he told me that it was coming from a nearby garbage truck. But I insisted that the sound came from inside the Music Center. I think later that day I realized he was right. On another day, I took a video of one of those trucks with its unique music. This was really something I don’t think I’ve ever seen anywhere else I’ve been to.

  3. Have commented on Youtube, and subscribed, tho I still haven’t figured how to get notifications of channels I’m subscribed to 😂
