Dog Days of Taiwan – A Canine Photo Essay

Photo Essay, Taiwan

As you walk the streets of Taiwan, you might think this island nation is having a massive baby boom because you’ll see proud parents pushing baby carriages everywhere you go. But if you look inside the strollers, you won’t see babies. Instead, you’ll see dogs – and the occasional cat or bunny. Taiwanese people love their dogs and take them everywhere.

As a photographer, I’m fascinated by the cute canines and their interactions with their parents. As a cat owner, I find it funny that they take their dogs to the supermarket, cafe, and 7-Eleven. Actually, I’m just jealous – I wish my cats could go everywhere with me.

Here is a collection of Taiwanese dog photos I’ve taken recently.

Poor dog, getting teased by a tasty treat.
The derpiest dog I’ve ever seen shopping with mom at the grocery store.
That is true love right there.
Man enjoying a sunset with the dog family at the Banana Pier.
This little princess is enjoying her time at the park while her daddy self-hypnotizes.
Dogs are pampered like babies in Taiwan.
Happy dog at the market.
Pug life.

The things we do for love.
How can you be upset with the world when there are so many cute dogs in it?
Dog living his best life.

  1. Oh this is so bizarre to me, and so wonderful, and so completely made me smile. I’m not a dog person. At all. So I don’t get it, but I do get that they love their dogs. So what’s not to love. You got some great shots Jeff.

    • Thanks Alison. I’m a cat person myself, and I used to walk my cat on a leash but she is too skidish now. Dogs are everywhere here in strollers like babies.

  2. I know this post is about dogs, but the captions stole the show! I laughed out loud more than once at “This little princess is enjoying her time at the park while her daddy self-hypnotizes,” but there were plenty of others that had me chortling. Very fun post.

  3. Being a dog person who grew up in a family of dog-lovers, I can completely relate to this post! My poor brother and/or mom still have to take our six-year-old black labrador out to do her business even in the height of a typhoon or torrential rainstorm. Growing up in Hong Kong we had an utterly spoiled shih tzu princess who lived her whole life without touching dry dog food (she had a fondness for barbecued pork, minced chicken, and rice). Bama and I did notice the dogs on our walks around Kaohsiung but didn’t think much of it. My favorite caption is hands down the one with all the hashtags, and that crazy pug T-shirt is something else!

    • I think the reason behind the falling birthrates is that people are spending too much time taking care of their dogs! You dog sounds spoiled. Our cats split a package of wet food each day and they go crazy for it.
