If you read Part I of this series, you will know that I accidentally drank beer for breakfast and thus had some challenges in photographing Hanoi. Drinking beer for breakfast isn’t something I do often – no really I promise! I do it maybe four days a week, tops. Anyway, I really love Hanoi. Although crowded and chaotic, it is also one of the greenest cities in Asia, with several lakes and parks and trees all around. It is basically what you’d expect from a French colonial city in Asia, a mashup of Paris and Vietnam.

The motorbike shots are always interesting – especially the one with the dog at the front of the moving bike.
How did you capture this? You’re in the middle of the road, and appear to be moving in front of the traffic … riding backwards with someone else driving (I hope)?
A magician never reveals his tricks, but an amateur photographer will. We were in a taxi and I shot that out of the back window. I was lucky to get it!
Of course I didn’t think of anything as logical as a taxi. I had something more James Bond-ish in mind 😉

I think you are drinking! Panning was often the only way to get the bikes in focus since they were buzzing by so fast!

I really enjoyed this…we’re going there in March, then a little of the countryside, Ha Long Bay, Hue and Hoi An, and Saigon. Yikes! And I’ve never been to Asia. If you have advice, I’m listening. Anyway, black and white seems to work well with these – maybe it tames some of the chaos. And I like the blurred backgrounds, partly-blurred foregrounds, etc. Also the double exposure, if that’s what it was. 🙂
Vietnam will be a great introduction to Asia. It is a microcosm of East Asia – crazy traffic, sweltering cities, friendly locals, delicious food, karst mountains, and ancient culture.
I’d highly recommend doing this food tour in Saigon – https://xotours.vn You ride around on a motorbike with a local visiting five different street food areas, getting a look at the city in the process. It is great fun and thrilling.
